cafeteria | bookstore design proposal

client: lakehead university orillia campus location: orillia
type: design proposal, unrealized size: 25,000 sq ft, 2 storeys

This design proposal was developed as part of an RFP submission for a new cafeteria/ bookstore facility to be constructed on the new Lakehead University campus in Orillia.  This facility was to be the third building on the new campus, following the construction of the main classroom building and a new residence building currently under construction.

The 2 storey facility contains: a large campus cafeteria with seating for 350; related servery; full commercial kitchen; public washrooms; pre-function/crush zone; a 750 sq ft bookstore; shipping/ receiving/storage facilities.  The building is located in the center of the campus.

The building is organized around a linear circulation spine serving as a connector between program elements and as a link connecting north and south ends of the campus.   A large pre-function space opens off one side of the hall, used for informal gathering and crush. The bookstore and dining spaces are located at opposite ends of the hall with a large servery and kitchen forming the central core.  Mechanical and electrical are located on the 2nd storey directly above the kitchen.

Bookstore, dining and pre-function spaces are glazed along the perimeter allowing views of the activities within.  In warm weather the exterior wall of the south facing dining area can open up and allow users to spill out onto an adjacent terrace.   A glazed clerestory lets light into the hall and three large central skylights bring light into the servery space.

Exterior materials reference the existing campus palette: clear and translucent curtain wall panels; eramosa limestone cladding; and exposed wood soffits.  The interior uses: exposed structure; polished concrete floors; exposed wood ceilings; painted gwb; and architectural masonry.
