ccr | kinsa centre design proposal

client: university of ontario (uoit) location: oshawa, ontario
type: design proposal, unrealized size: 150,000 sq ft, 3 storeys

This concept design for the proposed Centre for Cyber Crime Research (CCR) and Kids Internet Safety Alliance (KINSA) with the University of Ontario combines academic, private, institutional and public realms in a spectacular hybrid building located on the north end of the campus. The design proposal formed part of the RFP requested by the University.

The project includes: KINSA administration, offices and meeting rooms; a 11,000 sq ft KINSA interactive centre; 2 UOIT lecture theatres; a 1,000 seat IMAX theatre; CCR administration, offices, meeting rooms, and labs; a multipurpose hall; food services and dining area; and guest suites for visiting lecturers and academics.

The elements are organized around an internal double height atrium which contains an elevator, stairs and links all the components.  A glazed spine along the east side contains entrances, food services and meeting rooms. The KINSA interactive centre engages the south street frontage creating significant exposure for the facility. The IMAX is situated to the rear of the facility to obscure its mass and is entered at the 2nd floor level with the UOIT theatres tucked underneath.  The CCR is consolidated as a secure 3rd floor level.
