This Design/Build project for the University of Waterloo was awarded in Oct. 2009 and was substantially complete at the end of June 2011. The building will serve as the new expanded home for the Faculty of the Environment. The project is targeting LEED Platinum and will serve as a showcase for environmental sustainability. It is the first LEED building for the University of Waterloo.
This 4 storey project is designed as an independent structure which straddles over the existing 2 storey Environment II building. To the north of EV2 a new 4 storey addition contains: a ground floor cafe; 150 seat auditorium; 6 new classroom spaces; a planning studio; student lockers; study spaces; and commons. Overtop of the existing EV2, two storeys of new faculty offices are supported on 2-150ft long 2 storey high steel trusses which span to either side of the existing building. Separating the 3rd and 4th floor faculty offices from the 4 storey student area is a 4 storey sky-lit atrium with 2 storey living wall and feature stair that cantilevers out into the atrium.
Exterior cladding is comprised of prefinished metal siding, curtain wall, and aluminum panels. A new green roof and terrace is being added to the roof of EV2. The design build team is working with numerous faculty and stakeholder groups to ensure the new facility meets their requirements.
