food pavilion | the centre on barton

client: redcliff realty group location: hamilton, ontario
type: new construction size: 19,500 sq ft, 2 storeys

As part of the Centre Mall redevelopment project, AS+P was requested to design a new freestanding Food Pavilion to replace the original now demolished mall food court.  In addition to this, the new pavilion was intended provide a much needed social centre for the local population who used the original food court as meeting place.

The Food Pavilion provides: a variety of seating for 350 persons; 7 tenant food stalls with prep and storage areas; men’s, women’s and family washrooms; nursing room; back of house staff washrooms; garbage/recycling/ loading areas; and second floor offices for the mall management.

The exterior form of the pavilion is a large 2 storey box with extensive clear and acid etched glazing, framing the main seating area.  A folded plane wraps one side of the box and folds over and above the roof creating a 3 sided glazed clerestory over the seating space.

Interior finishes have been left largely raw: polished concrete floors; exposed steel columns, beams, joists and roof deck; gwb; and acoustic wall panels.  A series of pylons clad in composite quartz frame each tenant stall.  Dark cherry wood ceiling panels add warmth to the interior scheme.
