lindsay recreation complex restructuring
| client: city of kawartha lakes | location: lindsay, ontario |
| type: addition | reno | size: 5,500 sq ft addition | 20,000 sq ft reno, 2 storeys |
This challenging project involved the renovation of and additions to an existing recreation complex for the City of Kawartha Lakes on a very tight budget.
The project includes five distinct new additions: a new 1-1/2 storey entry vestibule; new administration office block; new two storey fitness addition; new washroom addition; and a new aquatics office addition. Significant interior renovations include: a completely renovated lobby with new elevator, concessions, and new control desk; renovated aquatics change rooms; renovated natatorium with new finishes, sauna, and exterior windows; new aerobics suite and second floor change rooms.
The existing facility was comprised of 2 separate buildings built in the 70s and 80s. The new additions give the tired facility a new face-lift by adding a layer of new construction in front of the old. Masonry and stone cladding combined with significant new glazing create a contemporary look and open up the existing cloistered facility. Along with the new glazed entrance, the facility creates an appropriate civil presence - a quality that was missing in the original facility.
The renovated lobby has new finishes, new washroom facilities, a seating/viewing area with new openings into the pool deck, creating a significant central meeting space for the community within the new complex. The project completed construction March 2012 and is open to the public.
